8 Black-owned Houston hair salons to help channel your inner Michelle Obama

SUPPORT BLACK-OWNED BIZ: Find your perfect outfit at these Black-owned Houston boutiques

Obama’s hair stylist can be found in Washington, D.C., but we’re in Houston, and that’s a pretty lengthy distance.

On the bright side, there are some Bayou City hair stylists and salons you can patronize if you’re hoping to channel your inner Michelle, including Salon Meyerland. The location operates 74 salons under one roof in individualized private salon suites, and 59 of them are Black-owned.

“The pandemic, political climate and racial divide has stripped away our sense of normalcy,” said Salon Meyerland representative Trinita Toler. “In today’s climate it is essential that support of Black-owned, independent businesses is showcased.”

The Houston Chronicle named Salon Meyerland its sixth best place to work among small businesses in the Top Work Places list for 2016, and eighth in 2017. The accolades clearly speak for themselves. How has the salon managed to secure a top spot with employees and customers alike? Through great customer service, quality work and products, and by keeping up with education and the latest trends.

The new trends are great, but if you’re in need of an “old school” hairdo, you may want to stop by Trendz by Tammy. From finger waves and Jheri curls to blunt cuts and color, you’re bound to leave satisfied.

“My salon has a comfortable old school feel and healthy conversations complete with differences of opinion. And that’s ok,” said the owner, who goes by Ms. Tam. “I have an overflow of business even in these pandemic times because I market myself everyday.”

A 25-year veteran in the hair industry, she said she believes her salon is “pertinent to this industry because we are hair stylists that actually do the client’s own hair in a culture of weavers and braiders.”

If there’s one style Black women can always rock — effortlessly, might I add — it’s braids. The owner is a Black-owned braider in Houston, specializing in knotless braids. Her work has made her a fan favorite on social media, boasting more than 15,000 followers on Instagram.

As Houston’s first official 24-hour full service salon, Hair Tyme is one of a kind. It offers a variety of services, from low cuts to locs, ensuring you’re sporting the perfect look when you leave the salon.

Not only are braids super cute and long-lasting, they’re also a top protective style for Black women. Houston Braid Style is a fan favorite in the Bayou City, with more than 64,000 followers on Instagram.

According to her website, Rohana Pennick’s motto is “Happy hair is healthy hair.” She promises to not only protect and perfect your hair, but teach you how to maintain and grow it too! What more could you ask for?
